Objectives Training simulators are mandatory for industrial sectors such as nuclear power and aircraft and are, therefore, widely used. However, in other sectors, their role remains still insignificant due to the high cost of development. In addition, they are usually designed and developed for only one special system. The goal of this project was to create cost-effective solutions for simulation-based training systems for plant operators, which can be integrated into existing production systems. Approach The Fraunhofer IPK develops tools, algorithms and infrastructure for training systems. Based on many years of experience in modelling and simulating complex processes and plants, we also take advantage of the latest technologies and tools developed at Fraunhofer IPK. Generic and re-usable concepts and components allow the system to be quickly adapted to the customers' needs. The use of webbased training systems enables the training center to be built up with low-cost standard computers. The systems are accessible regardless of time, duration and place. Results The outcome will be integrated into the training simulator laboratory at the Fraunhofer IPK. Experimental training units and systems will be created for demonstration purposes. Together with the partners, a qualified community of interest for production safety has been created. Funding This project is supported by Public State Funds and the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE) within the technology initiative »Safety with IT«. Our Partners
