Profile In close cooperation with leading clinics the Division of Medical Technology develops systems for medical applications, particularly for surgery, rehabilitation as well as radiation and laser therapy. The objective is to introduce automation technologies to medicine and to adapt these technologies to the specific needs of health personnel. The first interactive robot for head surgery in the world, as well as a navigation system for dental surgery, have been developed, clinically tested and applied by the Fraunhofer IPK together with the Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery, Clinical- Navigation and Robotics of the Charité Berlin. R&D Topics A primary focus of the Department’s research and development activities is on the development of mechatronic devices, especially systems for treatments in surgery, radiation therapy and dentistry. Systems and software components for the generation and modification of individual patient models and planning of operations are at the center of the R&D efforts in the field of medical data processing. The department also works on management systems for quality assurance and medical approval, developing databases and document systems to support companies in developing and manufacturing medical products according to legal requirements and standards. Business Areas Medical products and devices developed by Fraunhofer IPK are used widely in surgical therapy. Corresponding to the specific needs of producers and clinics, medical products are customized and validated in close cooperation with clinical partners.
